ABOUT THE ARTIST
BIOGRAPHY
Marianne loved art from an early age but after school changed course to become a nurse at University College Hospital, London. There she met her husband, a medical student who became a GP. They moved to Barnstaple in North Devon, where their three children were born.
Marianne started painting at adult education classes in 1965. Family life had to be balanced with her increasing dedication to her art. When her children were older she studied Fine Art as a mature student, gaining her degree from Exeter College of Art and Design in 1977.
Success soon followed with prizes in two South West TV sponsored exhibitions which resulted in solo shows at Newlyn Art Gallery in Cornwall and Beaux Art Gallery in Bath, and election to the membership of Newlyn Society of Arts. In 1994 Marianne was selected to show in 'Fantasy,' an exhibition of 'Fifteen Contemporary British Women Artists' by the Cultural Foundation, Abu Dhabi, UAE. For many years her work was also included in exhibitions at the Mall Galleries, London, the Royal West of England Academy, and Newlyn Art Gallery.
She has had fifteen one woman exhibitions in the south of England, including at The Burton Art Gallery, Bideford, Broomhill Art Hotel, Barnstaple and White Moose Gallery, Barnstaple. She has spoken about her work on television and radio and taught in local Art education. Marianne also participated in an annual Open Studio event in North Devon - Art Trek - opening her home and studio to show her work. Her paintings and drawings can be found in many private collections in Britain and abroad, including the U.S.A, Canada, Germany, Sweden, and Hong Kong.
ART PRACTICE
Light is the unifying factor in Marianne’s fifty years of painting, first using oil on canvas and then pastels on paper or card. Her first interest was in figures situated against the light, followed by domestic still life where symbolism also played a part.
Light filtering through and over the folds of pale fabrics was a favourite subject which led to observing the patterns of sand ridges on a beach and the changing light of sea and sky. Shifting patterns of light passing through trees and over water define space; she aims to weave these patterns into memorable images, finding pastel an ideal medium where small strokes are applied to create a dense matt finish. When using oil, paintings are built up slowly in thin layers of paint using small strokes of colour to achieve luminosity.
In recent years Marianne has focused on the North Devon countryside and garden scenery, including lakes, tree-lined valleys and narrow lanes, using sketches and photographs to plan the composition for landscapes.
